Did you ever drive with your car on water? Here is a nice winter activity just 15min outside
of Montreal island. The ferry between Oka and Hudson is closed in winter but the company
that runs the ferry in summer maintains an ice bridge in winter. It opens as soon as the ice is strong enough
and they check regularly if it is still safe. The opening of the ice bride is announced
on their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TraverseOkaHudson/). It depends obviously on local weather conditions as to when the bridge opens but in most years it opens at the end of January or the beginning of February. The ice should be about 36cm (12 inch) thick.
The ferry company charges 8$ per car. They mark the path, clear the snow and make sure it is safe.
This ice road is about 2km long and you can stop inbetween to take pictures or go for a walk on the ice.
Hudson - Oka ice bridge
On one of the above photos you can see one of the many "scray cracks" in the ice. But notice that the ice is so thick that the crack does not even fill with water.
