cornflower (centaurea cyanus)
Cornflowers loved to grow on fields, hence they got their names. But as the farmers only regard them as weed they are now only found in gardens.
how to grow:
Cornflowers are annuals but if the winter isn't too harsh and cold some seeds survive and the plants come back all by themselves every year. They are very beautiful! I definitively love cornflowers and bees and butterflies love cornflowers too.
medicinal properties:
The flowers of cornflowers come in blue, pink and white colors but only the blue ones are used in medicine.
The flowers can be used in an infusion as an eyebath for tired eyes and styes.
They are also good as a mouthwash for mouth ulcers.
Cornflower water can also cleanse and soothe irritated skin. They are said to have anti-inflammatory properties.
To make an infusion you take 1-2 teaspoons for 1 cup of boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes.
In folk medicine the seeds or leaves taken in wine were also used against the plague and other infectious diseases.
cautions and possible side effects:
- There is not enough information available so it's better to avoid taking cornflower during pregnancy.
